Daycare Openings, Description and Features

Daycare description / philosophy

The mission of Great and Small Daycare is to provide a nurturing and supportive environment which promotes cognitive, motor, social, and emotional development through play. We believe that the first six years set the foundations for life-long success, and offer structured programming to develop literacy skills, phonemic awareness, and positive character traits.

Our objective is to provide an inclusive atmosphere which creates a link between the home, daycare, and community. Staff will work with children to meet developmentally specific milestones, and families are encouraged to communicate with staff and participate in their child's programming. The center will promote a healthy lifestyle, and daily menus will include two-thirds of the Canada Food Guide requirements for children.

In addition to the Child Development Supervisor designation, the director of Great and Small Daycare has a Bachelor of Education degree, experience teaching kindergarten through grade twelve, and is passionate about facilitating engaging and entertaining learning opportunities.

Literacy opportunities are present throughout children's daily routines, and we strive to capture these teachable moments. Children learn the pattern of language in many ways including nursery rhymes, songs, literature, and poetry. Great and Small will provide developmentally appropriate opportunities to read, write, listen, speak, view, and represent language.

Children will be encouraged to develop Mathematical and Science skills through participation in daily calendar routines including counting and weather, measuring ingredients for recipes, and conducting simple experiments. A variety of books and manipulatives focusing on shapes, numbers, animals, and colors will be available during centers.

Character Education skills will be taught with thematic lessons and didactic literature. Children will explore ideas including friendship, honesty, responsibility, caring, and citizenship through stories, activities, art, and dramatic play.
