We moved to Edmonton August 1st. To say the search for childcare has been frustrating would be an understatement. It is right up there with trying to find a school for my daughter that is closer than her designated public school which is over 10 km from our home. Who makes up the boundaries? Having moved here from BC and having provided childcare in my home in the past, I find that the cost of childcare here is vastly overpriced. To pay anywhere from $410 - $475/month for someone to watch my daughter for 2 1/2 hrs a day is completely ridiculous. I am used to paying $300/month when I required my childcare provider to take my child to school as well as pick up. I used to charge $300/month for before/after school care when doing daycare myself from home. I also provided snacks and on Pro-D days lunches. Who knew I was missing the boat and could make a killing by charging the rates people are forced to pay here? Pure craziness, but an unfortunate necessary evil for another 3 yrs. Hope I can find something soon. I go back to work in 6 days.
