Toronto is without a doubt one of the most expensive places for childcare in the country, however, the lack of facilities is not entirely to blame. I think parents are setting a higher standard for the level of learning and engagement they look for in a child care center, and the industry is slowly coming around to that shift in demand. If you want high quality day care now, itís going to cost you, but as new locations open up and the market flattens out I think that will change. For now though, we need to change the way we view childcare, and budget accordingly.
Personally, I have my kids enrolled in Childventures. It is not one of the cheaper alternatives, but in my opinion the level of learning and care they receive is well worth it.

I don't think using an unlicensed daycare provider is as bad as you would think. I put my infant in a licensed daycare centre that was supposed to be the best and paid top dollar for it too and it ended up being a terrible experience. I got an accident report one day saying he had been dropped on his head by the teacher. No further explanation just dropped. I must have filled out at least a dozen incident reports in the 10 months that he was in there. On his last day I got a call telling me that he was being rushed to the hospital because he fell and blood was coming out of his ears. So you see, any place can be terrible. You might have a really great home care provider that is unlicensed. You should explore all of your options and make a decision that comes from your heart.

I think finding infant daycare spots in Toronto is just as difficult as anywhere else in Canada. Profit margins are not that great considering the ratios. Anyhow, book your daycare spot as early as you can. Daycares used to not allow booking of spots before birth. Now, some do.

When it comes to locating daycares in Toronto, there is definitely a shortage of available spots. Childcare spots in Toronto come at a high demand and need to be booked a year or more in advance in order to even stand a chance at competing for the daycare spot.

Parents who have to return to work and are unable to locate licensed daycare spots, have to come up with alternative arrangements for their childís care. Parents usually end up resorting to unlicensed daycare arrangements, such as private home care or using a nanny.
