Finding a daycare has been virtually impossible. I have four young children and I apologize that seems to be too many for care. I have been able to send the older ones to school but the twins and I need to stay home together as majority of facilities that do have space only have a single space. Winnipeg expects me to transport and leave my children all over the city. Not gonna happen before work.

Manitoba is unique in that about 96% of daycare programs are Non Profit (owned and run by community groups). The fees they charge are regulated by the Province. Therefore fees are very consistant between most programs (Infants 0-24 months max $28.00/day; Pre-school 2yrs-5yrs max $18.80/day; School-ager 6yrs-12yrs max $9.60 for before/lunch/after school programs). Nursery Schools (part time programs for 3 & 4 years olds also exist, sometimes as stand alones and sometimes run by daycare programs. A few programs exist that offer services in the evenings and week-ends but not many. Minimum teacher child ratios, groups sizes, levels of trained staff required are all regulated by provincial regulations which are amoungst the most demanding in Canada. Most programs welcome children of all abilites, and provide inclusion supports with the help of government grants. There is a shortage of care at all ages with the most severe shortage in Infant programs. Waiting lists vary so don't give up if you are 200th on the list at the first centre you call. Quality varies and until this site came into existance it was difficult for parents to get any indication of quality without doing a lot of visiting. I'd suggest you visit at least 3 centres and by then you will notice the differences and begin to get a feel for what you want.
