Looking for good quality home care in the downtown area is a tough job... and a lot of child care centers don't offer an infant program. My children be seperated when I return to work. I hear this happens often, but it will break my little one's heartshe will be 1yr). My son will most likely go to pre-school in that case... which will be alright as he will be 3yrs.

Ottawa has a centralized waiting list for daycare. You call one number, tell them what age group you're looking for and what area of the city you want the daycare to be in, and they do the work for you. The centralized waiting list saves you time and the headaches of having to call daycare centres individually. The waiting lists for some daycares can be up to a year or more - for infant care, you want to get on a list even before you have the baby. Once the baby is over the age of 2, it's much easier to find a daycare. The costs can vary going from a licensed agency at around $800 a month up to $1400 a month at a daycare centre for an infant (up to 12 months of age.) Ottawa is blessed with availability for daycare in both official languages - something it can be challenging to find in other cities. Pre-school in the french system starts full-time at age 4 and currently is half-time in the english system at age4 (although I've heard this is soon going to change to full-time.) Therefore, your daycare costs are reduced at that point.
