Many providers will ask you to sign a contract. When asked, it might be possible to obtain a trial period first (paid an with receipt). Add a clause to the contract forseeing sufficent notice to you, in case of the daycare closing. The provincial revenue ministry has a childcare cost partial reimbursement program which offers quarterly payments to those who will claim the expense on the following years' income tax declaration. See http://www.revenu.gouv.qc.ca/eng/formulaires/tpz/tpz-1029_8_f-v.asp . For emergency temporary bilingual daycare in the Quebec City region, consult the non-profit organisation L'arche de Noé at (418) 650-5718.

The accepted ratio for in-home daycare is 1 adult: 6 children. Expect fees of $20-25/week for full time, $25/day is normal for part-time attendance. Hours are generally 7:30-5:30, two snacks and lunch included. Where a provider is accredited, menus and environment meet with provincal standards and cost drops to $7 a day. Maternity leave in Quebec generally consists of 1 year, with the possibility of retaining employment for a further 2 years. So mothers of young children offering daycare may be only a short-term solution.

In each arrondissement there is one Daycare center that accredits their local in-home daycare providers. They can furnish a list of names and telephone contact numbers. 90% chance you'll need to speak french to communicate in your calls. 90 % chance that they suggest putting you on their 'waiting list'. Each arrondissement also has a local publication 'L'Actuel' that comes free in the 'Publisac' with classified ads. Check under 'garderies' and try the bank and supermarket notice boards, too.
On the Web, try www.lespac.com classified ads, again, under 'garderie' (weed through until you get out of Montréal and into the Quebec City region- about page 60 in your results) or http://www.rcpeqc.org/ which is an association that tries to stay current on openings both in the family environments and the centers.
