Title: Action on hazardous baby bassinet stalled for weeks
Post by: CareDC on October 28, 2008, 06:10:53 PM
A complaint to Health Canada about a potentially fatal incident involving an infant sat "in limbo" for nearly six weeks this summer - during which time a baby in the U.S. died in the same model of bassinet, internal government documents show.

Health Canada blames "bad timing," including an inspector's vacation and an e-mail that got lost in cyberspace, for its failure to launch an immediate investigation.

Correspondence from the department's product safety branch obtained under Access to Information legislation also shows media calls triggered a flurry of activity on the file one day after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a safety alert on Aug. 27 - six days after the strangulation death of a baby in Kansas.

A mother telephoned a customer service officer at Health Canada's product safety branch on July 18, detailing how her 10-week-old daughter had slipped out the side of the bassinet between a lower horizontal railing and the mattress, becoming trapped at her chest level in the 4-inch gap.
