Title: Kids need more play, says educator
Post by: CareDC on November 13, 2008, 10:48:18 PM
An early childhood educator contends that children are losing chances to play.

Small children need to spend most of their day playing and adults should be engaged but not control or direct that play, said Jane Hewes.

The chair of early childhood development at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton said there isn't enough time set aside for play at daycares.

"I'm not saying play is not happening in child care," Hewes said. "(But) we're not giving children the opportunity to explore the potential of play in their lives in a deep and profound way."

Hewes, who will present her research in Montreal Friday at a gathering of early childhood educators from across Canada, said she isn't blaming child-care workers.
