Parents wrestle with lead issue
« on: June 17, 2008, 08:42:24 PM »
EDMONTON - Concern over the massive recalls of toys containing excessive amounts of lead has some parents taking matters into their own hands to protect their children's health. They're buying home lead-testing kits and doing a safety check of their children's toys that most assumed was being done by the government and toy industry.

Exposure to lead, usually by ingestion, has been found to affect neurological development, especially in young children, who naturally put things in their mouths.

Sales of the home kits, available at some hardware stores and online, have been overwhelming and grow with every toy recall, says Dave Lachance, president of Abotex Enterprises Ltd., in Grand Bend, Ont., makers of the Lead Inspector kit.
