Another 50 meat products pulled
« on: August 30, 2008, 12:29:07 PM »
Calls continue to flow into the Perth District Health Unit with questions about the listeriosis outbreak, as another 50 additional products have been added to a recall list because they may contain some contaminated meat products from a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto.

PDHU spokesperson Linda Pagnotta said the local health unit is receiving about 10 Listeria-related calls per day, not as many as health unit officials had anticipated. Perth County has had only one person diagnosed with listeriosis, and that 89-year-old man is recovering well at home.

There have been eight confirmed deaths related to the nationwide outbreak, all in Ontario, and that has raised alarm, particularly for those who may have consumed foods from an ever-growing list of potentially infected products.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency added a variety of ready-to-eat products today that are sold in Sobeys and Foodland stores throughout Atlantic Canada.

The products, including hospitality and party trays, submarine sandwiches and wraps have best-before dates up to and including Aug. 25, 26 and 27.

Maple Leaf Foods Inc. recalled more than 200 products this week after initially recalling just a few products.
