Daycare or not
« on: January 29, 2008, 02:42:29 PM »
I know of a toddler who has just begun walking several weeks ago.  The parents on the fence about placing the child in a daycare centre.  The child would be too old for the infant room, but toddlers in the toddler room have been walking for much longer than this child. Any advice for them? What would be your suggestions?

Well, could she consider a good home childcare centre that has a desirable setting and desirable ages of children around...there are only 5 children in a home daycare setting, usually only 3 under the age of 3...

Well that would be a solution except for the long wait lists!!!  The centre has a spot available but the parents comfort level is not there.  If this was my child, i would place him in the infant room until the child could walk comfortably on his own.  What would you do if this was your only option?

Does the centre have space in the infant room? sometimes they do not, as their ratios are lower..and the toddler may find it less stimulating in an infant room..there would be less adjustments needed if she jsut began the child in toddlers..the staff should be able to "protect" the child from being run over...if their ratios and space is good..and the child wouldnt have to change staff in only a few weeks when all of a sudden the child IS ready for tods- as they do learn to walk fast lol

but if the parents are not comfortable, then they should find a provider that will meet their needs and usually home providers can provide more flexibility to individual needs... not all of them have wait lists..the family can call the local county childcare services and ask them for a list of providers on their list (licensed home providers are on a list in most counties)..they can also check the local preschool resourses office and see if they have a list of licensed and non licensed providers...and they can start to "shop around".  ITs not always good to settle with the first option/nor the cheapest option...only if it feels right.
