Program aims to block predators
« on: November 20, 2008, 01:24:50 PM »
Manitoba day cares will begin piloting a program designed to keep child predators from infiltrating organizations like child-care centres, schools, sports teams, Big Brothers, Girl Guides and other kid-friendly groups.

The program, called Commit to Kids, was designed by the Winnipeg-based Canadian Centre for Child Protection and includes training for staff of these organizations and information for parents whose kids participate in the groups.

Family Services Minister Gord Mackintosh said it's a commonly accepted fact child predators seek out volunteer and employment roles with child-service organizations as a means of access to potential victims.

He said criminal record checks provide "a false sense of security" as only about 5% of child molesters have prior convictions.
