1 in 9 Canadian kids still live in poverty: Report
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:38:19 PM »
Almost one child in nine in Canada is living in poverty despite a promise made 19 years ago by Parliament to eradicate child poverty, and advocates are cautioning that statistic will worsen with the current economic downturn unless the federal government implements a national poverty reduction strategy.

In an annual report card on poverty released Friday, a coalition of organizations called Campaign 2000 said 760,000 children were living in low-income families in 2006 - the latest year for which statistics are available.

In First Nations communities, one in every four children is growing up in poverty.
