The federal Indian Affairs department has launched a pilot project to conduct background checks on family members who look after native children on British Columbia reserves.

The project will screen caregivers who apply for money through the Guardian Financial Assistance program, which provides financial assistance to relatives who take in children whose parents are unable to care for them.

The trial screening mirrors measures implemented last December for the province's Child in Home of a Relative program, a provincial program that is the off-reserve equivalent to Guardian Financial Assistance program.
