Birth Rate on the Rise: Statistics Canada
« on: September 23, 2009, 02:13:40 PM »
Statistics Canada says women across the country had babies at a higher rate and at a later age in 2007.

That year, Canadian women gave birth to 367,864 babies. That boosted the total fertility rate from 1.59 in 2006 to 1.66 in 2007. Thatís the fastest annual increase since 1989.

It is still well below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.

A spokesperson from the Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada says improved maternity and parental benefits have helped. However, Jody Dallaire says more parents need to return to full-time work, and that is causing increased stress in the home.
