Daycare description / philosophy

The Daycare is located within the Boys and Girls Club building. The facilities incorporate a large gymnasium and two playgrounds which allow for plenty of active play time. The Daycare rooms are brightly decorated with the children's art and set up to be very child friendly. The staff are welcoming and supportive of the children and have many years of experience. Please contact Linda Goguen for more information.
Philosophy
The Boys & Girls Club of Saint John Inc.'s Early Childhood program is legislated by the Child Day Care Facilities Operator Standards Developed by the New Brunswick Department of Family and Community Services (Social Development). Our philosophy is to provide an environment that is guided by the Government of New Brunswick and by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Mission Statement and core values.

Value Based Curriculum

The new curriculum which is now guiding all Early Childhood Education facilities in the Province of New Brunswick has a number of values that will be incorporated into the daily operations of all licensed facilities. These values include the recognition and distinctiveness of childhood , children's rights, inclusiveness and equity, compassion and caring, spirituality, children's zest for living and learning, living democratically, individuality and independence, social responsibility, communication, imagination, creativity and play aesthetics. All of these values will be incorporated by the Early Childhood Educators into the Daily Program.

Key Focus Area's

The key focus areas of the new curriculum are broken down into 4 areas which will be in the forefront of programming for the children. These include:

1. Well Being
- emotional health and positive identities
- belonging
- physical health

2. Play and Playfulness
- imagination and creativity
- playful exploration and problem solving
- dizzy play

3. Communication and Literacies
- communication practices
- multi-model literacies
- literate identities with and in communites

4. Diversity and Social Responsibilities
- inclusiveness and equity
- democratic practices
- sustainable futures

School Readiness

The concept of school readiness has been replaced by readiness to learn which addresses two broad categories of learning - social and intellectual. In the years prior to school children need to experience successful social interactions with peers including taking turns, making compromises and approaching new children. Intellectually, children benefit from opportunities for rich hands-on experiences, meaningful conversations, cooperative play with their peers which may start school at the same time. There is ample evidence that children who have had opportunities to engage with peers prior to school entry, will make a smoother transition into kindergarten. The Early Education Program certainly aims to achieve this goal by offering quality social and intellectual opportunities for all participants.
