Drop off
« on: September 09, 2008, 09:36:32 AM »
I have a parent who likes to stay for at least 15 mintues at drop off. Now I must tell you this is their first few days with me-I said today when dad suggested to stay longer (because the he said he was going and the boy started to cry) I told him it's best that he leaves now.

Has anyone else experienced this? In a childcare setting I am used to telling parents that and then they keep doing that-I think the prolonged visit just delays the cries and sometimes makes it worse.

I think I am also dealing with parents that spoil/over protect their child(ren).

Any sharing of stories would be appreciated.

I encourage families to visit often and frequently working up to the childs first day..and to stay the entire visit wit them for a few and then leave them for an hour once or twice before their first full day. After their initial visits, drop off is expected to be done within minutes ...I greet them at the door and "take" the child in with happy loving words and move them into the program or let them walk in by themselves. I tell parents right of the hop to be sure to plan on leavign quickly as it is easier on the child and doesnt prolong the separation anxiety..if there ever are tears, I have NEVER had a child cry longer than 2 min...they quickly get involved in the program activities.

I agree with Spud. And the trouble is that sometimes the parents are really the ones with separation anxiety. Just reassure the parents upon pick-up that their child quickly engaged in 'such-and-such' an activity after they left and the child has had a wonderful day.
