Daycare description / philosophy

About Tot Spot:
Tot Spot Academy is an educational, play-based day home located just minutes south of the Lois Hole Enjoy Centre in Northwest Edmonton. With communication at the heart of all child development, Tot Spot Academy is a language rich environment centering around play as a method of learning and growth. We foster imagination and cognitive development through a variety of play and hands-on activities.

Programming:
At Tot Spot Academy, children are encouraged to learn and grow through guided and open-ended play. Various learning experiences and sensory opportunities are set up each day.
We provide breakfast, lunch, two snacks and milk (homo and soy) each day. We provide healthy, home cooked meals with little to no processed food. Whenever possible, we aim for organic, locally grown produce. Weekly meals plans are emailed out to parents.
We enjoy learning through a variety of experiences and take in literacy programs at local libraries. We also engage in a variety of other outings such as: the zoo, Telus World of Science, nature walks, parks to promote gross motor development, indoor play centers and more. All costs of field trips are covered by Tot Spot Academy at no additional charge to the parents.

About Alicia:
Prior to having my son, I was a full-time division one elementary special needs teacher with the Edmonton Public School board and I am currently a Child Development Supervisor (formally a level three care provider). I am specialized in language development and have extensive training in early literacy intervention and support. With experience in fine and gross motor development, I am knowledgeable in the social, emotional and physical developmental milestones of children.
Having taught in the Tevie Miller Speech and Language program at the School for the Deaf, experience has shown me that young children receive several developmental benefits from learning sign as a second language.
In 2012, I was nominated as an Edmonton YWCA Woman of Distinction in the Education category. I believe that patience, love and understanding help to foster self awareness and emotional regulation in children. I strive to help children develop a passion for learning and become life long learners.

Location:
We are located just off of the Henday at Ray Gibbons Drive. We are about 5 minutes North of the Yellowhead and 8 minutes away from the Whitemud. We are located beside a Provincial Park so there is plenty of green space and we are always close to nature. Across the street is the ravine with mini waterfalls and walking trails. Down the road are two lakes (one natural, one man-made). In the spring a playground will be built within walking distance from our front door.
