A little about me: I have been running a daycare from my home for 5+ years here in Canada since returning from a ten-year stay in the UK. I did run a fully licensed home daycare for many years beforehand in southern England as well (home daycares are regulated and licensed to qualified persons in the UK), which was regulated by the UK education watchdog, OFSTED. My provision was regularly inspected for safety, with a formal report written and published on the quality of care I provided at the time. In the UK I had been teaching one day a week as a University Professor and I had also been teaching at the local Infant School (4-6yr olds) once a week for six years. The other four days a week were devoted to childminding. I have studied on an MA on nutrition in the western world as well as little known toxins found in our food and in our homes. I have a subject specific diploma in Homebased Childcare which you can see during our initial meeting, as well as comprehensive Policies and Procedures, full documentation of Risk Assessments and portfolio with credentials, qualifications, insurance, security and Health and Safety documents. I was a member of the National Childminder's Association of Britain, which is the representing body of all registered and licensed providers in the UK, as well the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY). My husband and I have current First Aid/CPR qualifications as well as Criminal Records Bureau checks. References from the families currently coming to me will surely tell you that we keep it fun and that we a very flexible, outgoing and happy family. The kids that come here are very happy and there is very little turn-over, most children have been together for years and thus are very close. It truly does end up being a home away from home. I chose to be a Childminder initially so that I could be home for my young children and it was all the more attractive because it was such a well respected, proper ‘career-path’ in the UK. Regardless, now that my children are a bit older and we have returned home to Ottawa, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else! As part of my Diploma in Home-Based Childcare I have taken courses on Safeguarding Children, Sign Language, Risk Assessment for home provisions, Physical, Social and Emotional Development, Knowledge and Understanding of our World, Physical Development, Communication, Language and Literacy, Creative Development, Problem Solving and Numeracy and Speech Therapy. I have worked with some special needs children ranging from selective mutes, behavioral issues to English as a Second Language children.
As I am bilingual, so too is this setting.
Physical activity is also extremely important and great emphasis is placed on outdoor play, but when inclement weather makes thisimpossible, indoor equipment is on hand. Maintaining a solid rest routine is paramount to ensure that the time you have with your children after pick-up is not impeded by being over tired and your nighttime sleep is not unnecessarily interrupted by a wakeful little one.
Proper documentation on injuries, carbon copied and signed, as well as similar documents for administering medicines and so forth are part of my provision. Permission documents are provided for your signature and approval so that you have control over every aspect of the care in this setting. I also consider it part of my job description to ensure that you can meet your work commitments and I do take this very seriously. We do have one small, fluffy white dog that is hypoallergenic but ironically has allergies himself, so sadly we will not be able to take on any furry children ; )
Appointments to book an interview for September 2018 spots x 2 will begin on March 1 st, 2018 on a first come first served basis until openings are filled. If you would like to book an appointment please get in touch.
Thank-you
